Report No. t127

Paulus Leonius

d. 1590

Alternative Names

Paulus Leonius, Patavinus; Paolo Leoni

Biography/Description

Mentioned in DGI 2.1974 as having written a De substitutionibus (TUI 1584 t. 8.1) before the publication of the work of the same title of Alessandro Trentacinque (1st ed. Venezia 1588). P. was bishop of Ferrara from 1578 until his death in 1590. Of his career before that we have been able to find little. He apparently came from Padova; he probably taught there, because his published works (see WorldCat) have a decidedly academic bent. Possibly an earlier version of the De substitutionibus was published in Napoli in 1563.
