Biography/Description

CERL Thesaurus. Italian edit16 contains a considerable amount of information about G. that we have not confirmed but have no reason to doubTUI 1584 t. What might be called his inaugural lecture at Bologna, a repetitio on D.30.1.55, was published in Bologna in 1518. 1524 saw the first printing of his De peste (TUI 1584 t. 18) also in Bologna (reprint Bologna 1528). G’s chief claim to fame is his representation of Henry VIII in the matter of his divorce from Katherine of Aragon. His consilium for the king was published in Bologna in 1531; his argument before Clement VII on 10 April 1532 was published in Roma; his rebuttal of the arguments of Katherine’s advocates on 21 June 1532 was also published in Roma. When he lost the case, he returned to Bologna in 1534 and died shortly thereafter. Of the very large literature on the topic of this divorce, it is surprising that, so far as we are aware, relatively little attention has been paid these arguments.
