P. was born in Brudzeń Duży near Dobrzyń nad Wisłą around 1370. He studied at Prague, Padova and finally at the academy of Kraków, where he received a doctorate in canon law in 1411 or 1412, and immediately began to lecture. He served as rector of the academy in 1414–1415 and prorector in 1418. He represented Poland in various diplomatic missions, most notably at the council of Constance in 1414, where he presented his best-known work, the Tractatus de potestate papae et imperatoris respectu infidelium. The immediate occasion of this work was the activities of the Teutonic Order in Prussia and Lithuania. P. espoused concilarism throughout his life and the idea of peaceful coexistence among nations, even non-Christian ones, to which he ascribed a right to property. He is regarded by many as having anticipated modern ideas about human rights. He retired from public life after 1424 and died in 1435. |
