Biography/Description |
S. is not well known, although recent work by Eltjo Schrage has made him better known. (He makes no appearance in Savigny, and he has no biography and is mentioned only once in the DGI.) He first appears in a list of professors at Padova in 1222. He does not seem to have migrated, as did most of the studium at Padova, to Vercelli in 1228. He served under the d’Este as an appellate judge in Vicenza (hence the toponym in his name). Diplovatatius calls him ‘legum doctor excellentissimus, qui in iure civili et maxime super codicem scripsit’, but his work is hard to find, particularly because his siglum ‘Sy’ was shared by three other medieval jurists. He also had the misfortune of being an almost exact contemporary of Accursius, and although the latter may have used his work, he does not cite him. To the extent that they have been studied, his writings have received notice as being of similar quality to those of the great Bolognese jurists. He cited older glossators extensively and was later cited by Jacobus de Ardizone, Guillelmus Durandus, Johannes Andreae, and Baldus de Ubaldis. |
