The following short forms are used throughout:

In references to standard editions and to commonly known general works on the sources and literature of Roman and canon law in the Middle Ages – such as Savigny, Maassen, Schulte, Fournier-Le Bras, Kuttner’s, Repertorium, Van Hove’s Prolegomena (2nd ed.), the Monumenta iuris canonici, etc. – only a shortened title will be given, without bibliographical detail. The Proceedings of the International Congresses of Medieval Canon Law will be referred to as (e.g.): Proceedings Boston 1965. E.g.:

Savigny, Geschichte 6.71–98

Schulte, QL 2.313 n.5

Kuttner, Repertorium 435

M. Bertram, ‘Kanonistische Quaestionensammlungen von Bartholomaeus Brixiensis bis Johannes Andreae’, Proceedings Cambridge 1984 (MIC C:8; Città del Vaticano 1988) 265–281

For the serial publications of the great academies:

Abh. Akad. . . . followed by name of city, e.g. Berlin, München, etc. = Abhandlungen der . . . preussischen, bayerischen, etc. Akademie der Wissenschaften, philosophisch-historische Klasse.

Similarly for Mémoires, Memorie, Proceedings, Rendiconti, Sitzungsberichte, etc. the abridged form is always understood as referring to the series covering philosophy and the humanities where several classes or sections exist in a single academy; e.g.

Mém. Acad. Inscr.

Proceed. Brit. Acad.

Rendic. Istit. Lombardo

Sb. Akad. Wien

In addition to the above, the following short forms are used:

Belloni, Professori giuristi = A. Belloni, Professori giuristi a Padova nel secolo XV: Profili bio-bibliografici e cattedre (Frankfurt 1986)

Juristas universales = Juristas universales, Rafael Domingo Oslé ed., 4 vols. (Madrid 2004)

Kuttner, Catalogue = S. Kuttner et al. (ed.), A Catalogue of Canon and Roman Law Manuscripts in the Vatican Library, 2 vols. (Studi e Testi 322, 328; Città del Vaticano 1986–87)

Lange, Glossatoren = Hermann Lange, Römisches Recht im Mittelalter: 1 Die Glossatoren (München 1997)

Lange/Kriechbaum, Komentatoren = Hermann Lange and Maximiliane Kriechbaum, Römisches Recht im Mittelalter: 2 Die Kommentatoren (München 2007)

Tractatus (Lyon 1549) (followed by vol. and folio in the form ‘15.22ra’) = Tractatus ex variis juris interpretibus, 18 vols. (Lyon 1549)

Tractatus (Venezia 1584) (followed by vol. and folio in the form ‘15.22ra’) = Tractatus universi juris, duce, & auspice Gregorio XIII . . . in unum congesti, 22 vols. (Venezia 1584–1586). In the text this is sometimes referred to as ‘TUI 1584’.

In citations to manuscripts, the city is spelled out in full, using the official spelling of the name. This is followed by a standardized abbreviation of the name of the library, followed by the shelfmark of the manuscript. The name of the library spelled out in full may be found in the Index of Manuscript Libraries, together with any links that we have to the library’s online description and/or catalogue.
