portentous event economic decline in some of the insular possessions had 
diminished appellate recourse to England. From the Channel Islands there 
was also a noticeable lessening of the flow of appeals, although the islanders 
remained as litigious as ever. The only promise of life lay in the increasing 
number of appeals from East India. Ironically enough, this surge of appeals 
contained in itself the seeds of death, for it was inability to cope with the host 
of East Indian appeals that ultimately led to abolition of the Committee for 
Hearing Appeals and the statutory establishment of the Judicial Committee 
of the Privy Council.
