Thus, in 1738 some merchants complained against a January 16,1737/8, Jersey ordinance for enforcing one of the Navigation Acts that it was most arbitrary and directly against approved laws given by former rulers. 300 The Committee ordered this petition transmitted to the Royal Court to answer and that proceedings under the ordinance be stayed. 301 But when the answer was returned the matter disappeared from sight upon a reference to the crown law officers. 302 A few years later, in May, 1742, the inhabitants of the Jersey parishes of St. Helier and St. Brelade complained of several taxing acts of the States which in their variance from ancient methods increased the proportionate burden SS;i PC 2/84/363. *™Bid., 51-53; PC 2/91/278-79. 356 PC 2/84/370. a™ pc 2/95/43. 357 PC 2/84/391. 361 PC 2/95/83. 358 For this Order in Council see 3 Ordres 362 PC 2/95/307. du Conseil et Pieces Analogues Enregistres A Jersey (1899), 42-44.
