Biography/Description

Oxford master around 1221; identified as being skilled in canon and civil law. In the 1230s and 1240s spent time in royal service and in the service of the bishops of Durham. Archdeacon of Coventry from 1247, Lord Chancellor of England from 1250 until 1255, and bishop of Ely from 1255 until his death on 21 September 1256 in Spain on a diplomatic mission for King Henry III.
