Biography/Description

A Bolognese commentary on the Decretum. The drafting obviously took several years. Based on references to the Third Lateran Council (1179) and decretals of Lucius III (1181–85) and Urban III (1185–87) but nothing later in the first part, the initial composition must have taken place during Urban III’s pontificate. The latter section (C.27 ff.) cites decretals after Compilatio prima (1191). The anonymous author (Petrus Beneuentanus?) worked during the same time as Huguccio and shared opinions and concerns with him, but he often proposed doctrinal positions of his own and cannot be said merely to have drawn from Huguccio’s work.
