Summa ‘Antiquitate et tempore’

1170s

Biography/Description

A Summa on pars prima of the Decretum, which was composed by a French master of the Arts during the 1170s. It contains references suggesting that the author taught at Cologne for some time. He also wrote Notule super libello de signficationibus uerborum, which, however, have not yet been found. The Summa probably never covered more than D.1–101 of Gratian’s work. The Mainz and Vatican MSS include only D.1–10 of Antiquitate et tempore and, for the rest of pars prima, preserve an adaptation of Rufinus’ Summa and Antiquitate et tempore, the so-called Pseudo-Rufinus.

Modern Editions

Edited in part by J. von Schulte in Die Summa magistri Rufini zum Decretum Gratiani (Giessen 1892). (Von Schulte mistook the text in MS Göttingen for the commentary of Rufinus. The error was discovered by Tanon (1888) and Singer (1895), who also printed numerous excerpts..)
